BMW is preparing to launch the next-generation 3 Series in 2026, and the fully electric version will revive the i3 name. First revealed alongside the new iX3, the i3 showcases BMW’s Neue Klasse design language and sixth-generation eDrive technology, both of which will form the backbone of 40 new models by 2027.

Although the i3 will lead the charge, petrol-powered versions of the 3 Series will continue, sharing much of the design but with distinct proportions to accommodate four- and six-cylinder engines. Electric models will feature a shorter bonnet, sleeker windscreen and broader arches, while retaining classic BMW cues like the Hoffmeister kink and the familiar saloon silhouette.

The i3 will sit on a dedicated EV platform with 800-volt architecture, promising ultra-rapid charging and impressive range. Using BMW’s latest cylindrical battery cells, energy density is boosted by 20 per cent and charging speeds improved by 30 per cent compared to current packs. In ideal conditions, hundreds of miles of range can be replenished in just minutes.
Inside, the new 3 Series will adopt BMW’s Panoramic iDrive, projecting essential information across the windscreen while minimising distractions. Petrol and hybrid versions will share the same modern interior concept and updated electronics.
A next-generation M3 will follow soon after, available with both petrol and electric powertrains. The electric variant is rumoured to feature a quad-motor system capable of extraordinary performance, marking a bold new chapter for BMW’s most iconic saloon.
