The BMW 3 Series Horse Edition has rolled off the line as the 7 millionth vehicle to leave BMW Brilliance’s Shenyang Production Base, a landmark moment for one of the marque’s most important manufacturing hubs anywhere in the world. Beyond the headline figure, the milestone underlines just how deeply the BMW Group has rooted itself in the Chinese market over more than three decades, while also setting the stage for a new chapter built around intelligent manufacturing, local innovation, and the upcoming Neue Klasse era.

For Raymond Wittmann, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Production, the seven-million figure is much more than a statistic. He pointed to the strength of local production and the dedication of the Chinese workforce, before noting that the start of local Neue Klasse production later this year will open the next chapter for BMW in China. Birgit Boehm, President and CEO of BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd, echoed the sentiment, framing the achievement as seven million separate occasions when Chinese customers chose to trust the brand.
The fact that the BMW 3 Series Horse Edition was chosen for the honour speaks volumes about the agility of the Shenyang operation. Tailored specifically for the Chinese market, the special edition showcases the close cross-functional collaboration between R&D, purchasing, and manufacturing teams at the base, while also demonstrating Shenyang’s ability to deliver stable, high-quality output in one of the most competitive automotive markets in the world.

From the first locally built BMW rolling off the line in 2003 to today’s seven-millionth milestone, the Shenyang site has grown into a comprehensive operation covering complete vehicle assembly, powertrain manufacturing, localised research and development, and a fully integrated local supply chain. Guided by the wider BMW iFACTORY vision, the base has become a benchmark for forward-looking, high-quality production, with digitalisation and artificial intelligence now woven into every stage of the manufacturing process to lift efficiency, quality control, and operational coordination.
Looking ahead, Shenyang is gearing up to play a central role in the local production of Neue Klasse models. Upgrades are underway across the production system, the digital architecture, and the supply chain, with flexible manufacturing techniques, AI-driven quality management, and a highly connected digital production network all forming part of the picture. Combined with ongoing employee upskilling and a focus on cultivating talent, these efforts position the base to lead the next era of premium automotive manufacturing, helping BMW accelerate its push into electrification, digitalisation, and sustainability on Chinese roads and beyond.
