Inka Orange is back, and it has landed on a 1972 BMW 3.0 CSi. Ronnie Fieg, the founder of streetwear label Kith, has taken that E9 coupé and a 1987 BMW M6 and rebuilt both from the shell up. Each now wears paint code 022, a shade BMW first mixed in 1971. Neither car left Munich in it. Neither looks like it should ever have worn anything else.
The colour carries real weight in Bavaria. BMW launched Inka Orange on the 02 range, spreading it across the 1502, 1602 and 2002. It later reached the E3 saloons and the E9 coupés, which is how Fieg ended up with a period-correct canvas. By the middle of the Seventies the shade had become shorthand for a quick Bavarian saloon parked outside somewhere expensive. Very few colours date a car so precisely.
This marks the fourth collaboration between Fieg and BMW. The run opened in 2020 with a Cinnabar Red M4 Competition, chosen as a nod to the E30 M3. Vitality Green and Techno Violet followed. The two coupés also mark 15 years of Kith in New York, and the cars themselves happen to sit exactly 15 years apart. Fieg does not leave that sort of detail to chance.
There are no engine swaps here and no hunt for a bigger power figure. Both cars went back to bare metal and onto a rotisserie so the paint reached every seam, edge and box section. The E9 keeps its M30 straight-six. The M6 keeps its S38. Both units were rebuilt to period specification rather than modernised, which is the harder and slower route.
Inside, caramel leather runs through both cabins, with Kith monograms tucked into the trim and even onto the radio. The M6 goes a step further and greets its driver with “Kith E24” on the LCD readout. Neither coupé is bound for an auction block. Fieg is keeping the pair in his own collection, and on this evidence you can hardly blame him.
