The 2027 BMW i7 has been handed a thorough overhaul, and the electric flagship now covers far more ground between plugs. A new 112.5kWh battery uses cylindrical cells that hold 20 per cent more energy than the outgoing pack. The motors have been made more efficient as well. Together that lifts the figure to as much as 364 miles on the EPA cycle, a serious leap for a limousine of this heft.

Charging has been sorted too. The pack now accepts up to 250kW, so a 10 to 80 per cent replenish takes roughly 28 minutes. A NACS socket comes as standard, which opens up Tesla’s Supercharger network along with a broader set of adapters. The trim names have changed as well. The old eDrive50 and xDrive60 become 50 xDrive and 60 xDrive. Both run twin motors and drive all four wheels.
Performance is brisk rather than ferocious. The 50 xDrive delivers 449bhp and 487lb ft, clearing 0 to 60mph in 5.3 seconds. Step up to the 60 xDrive, and you get 536bhp, 549lb ft and 4.6 seconds. Throttle response has been retuned to build more progressively, and BMW has piped in fresh drive sounds. The hardcore M70 is absent for now, though it should eventually dip well under four seconds.

The styling has calmed down a fraction. The nose is blunter and more angular, the illuminated kidney grilles have shrunk, and the roundel on the bonnet has grown. Strip-like daytime running lights sit above upright LED headlamps, while the tail-lamps stretch almost to the centre of the boot lid. New door handles, a fresh side crease and two-tone BMW Individual finishes round off the makeover. It is still an unmissable slab of a motor car.
Inside is where the real work has gone. A 17.9-inch hexagonal touchscreen anchors the dash, joined by BMW Panoramic Vision spanning the width of the cabin, a 3D head-up display and a standard 14.6-inch passenger screen. Operating System X runs the show, with Alexa+ on board and a wiring harness that is 30 per cent lighter. Rear passengers can specify Executive Lounge chairs, a 31.1-inch 8K cinema display and 39 speakers of Bowers & Wilkins sound. It is no Taycan when the road tightens, but as a chauffeur-driven flagship the i7 is close to unanswerable.
