The V8 Roars Back as BMW’s New M760 Buries the 760i for Good

The 760i is finished. In its place storms the new BMW M760, an M Performance flagship that plugs the V8-shaped gap left in the facelifted 7 Series earlier this year. BMW promised the eight-cylinder would return, and Munich has kept its word. Power climbs to around 570hp, a healthy jump over the 536hp of the car it replaces. Just don’t expect twelve cylinders.

That is the catch. The previous-generation M760i earned its legend with a silky V12, but this one makes do with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8. It still hands BMW’s biggest saloon a serious dose of extra punch. Drive goes to all four wheels, with xDrive fitted as standard. Anyone craving a dozen cylinders will now have to walk across to a Rolls-Royce Ghost.

Despite the M badging, this is not quite an M7. The M760 sits in the M Performance tier, becoming the third 7 Series to wear that label after the M760e and the i7 M70. The “i” has also vanished from the name, as BMW now reserves that letter for its electric cars. Better news awaits European drivers. The old 760i never went on sale there, but the M760 will, hinting that the V8 has passed strict Euro 7 rules.

Rivals are taking very different routes. The Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance leans on plug-in hybrid power, while BMW keeps the M760 focused on old-school combustion grunt. The Audi S8 hardly poses a threat either, with A8 production ending this year and no direct successor expected for several years. That leaves the Munich bruiser plenty of room to roam. Yet another V8 7 Series is already waiting in the wings.

In 2027, the new BMW Alpina sub-brand will launch a plusher V8 version aimed at the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. Its engine gets a bespoke tune, possibly favouring low-down torque over headline horsepower to suit Alpina’s grand-touring character. BMW has not yet quoted torque for the M760, though the outgoing 760i delivered 750Nm. With SUVs ruling the sales charts, Munich deserves credit for still backing the big saloon. The luxury barge lives on, and it has found its voice.
