New BMW Concept 7 Protection Shrugs Off Magnum Rounds Calmly

BMW has rolled out the Concept 7 Protection, and it means business. The armoured saloon looks like any other 7 Series at the kerb. Underneath, it is built to stop selected handgun rounds, 9×19 mm and .44 Magnum among them. BMW has been building certified protection vehicles for more than 45 years. This one shows where the range heads next.

The engineering stays buried out of sight. Ballistic steel and fibre-reinforced composites sit inside the doors. The glazing is far thicker than standard. Overlaps between door, glass and bodywork are sealed into the protection concept. A layer of steel and composite hides beneath the panoramic sunroof, so the blind stays shut for good. The rear triangular windows gain extra armour, concealed from inside the cabin. Side windows still drop electronically, though never all the way. Bulkhead and rear wall belong to the same protective shell. Blast protection is not on the menu, and BMW says that calls for a higher-level car.

Weight like this demands muscle. The concept borrows its powertrain from the M760e xDrive. A 3.0-litre straight six works alongside an electric motor housed in the eight-speed Steptronic gearbox. Combined output reaches 450 kW, or 612 hp, with 800 Nm of torque. Drive goes to all four wheels through xDrive. Chassis, brakes and driver assistance systems have been recalibrated for the extra mass, and BMW is chasing a series-like feel from behind the wheel.

Inside, the mood is calm rather than military. Smoke White Individual Merino leather covers the seats, with Alcantara trim and an M Anthracite Alcantara headlining above. A new BMW Individual rear console makes its debut here, complete with a folding table, a wireless charging tray and a cool box. Production 7 Series buyers get the same unit from the second half of 2027. An intercom lets occupants speak to the world outside with every door and window sealed. An attack alarm sounds off and lights up if matters turn ugly.

The Concept 7 Protection slots beneath the 7 Series Protection and the X5 Protection in BMW’s armoured range. It meets the new BayB standard and targets private buyers, companies and organisations facing unpredictable risk. Selected European markets come first. BMW has stopped short of committing to production, yet the signal could hardly be clearer. Discretion, it turns out, can be the strongest armour of the lot.
