Six hundred and four horsepower. That is the headline behind the new BMW iX3 M60 xDrive, the fiercest version yet of the brand’s Neue Klasse electric SUV. It wears an M Performance badge rather than full M colours, yet it hardly lacks bite. Twin motors team up to unleash 875Nm of torque the instant you flex your right foot. The family SUV just grew fangs.

Launch it hard, and 62mph arrives in just 3.9 seconds. Keep your foot planted and the iX3 M60 charges on to 149mph. An M differential on the rear motor feeds that power to the tarmac with real intent. Bespoke springs and dampers sharpen the standard adaptive M suspension. Variable ratio steering and M Sport brakes complete a chassis built to attack corners, not merely commute.
Pace usually punishes range, but not here. The M60 draws on the largest 113kWh battery in the line-up, the same pack found in the iX3 50. It delivers a claimed 460 miles, only a modest step down from its calmer sibling. Find one of the rare 400kW chargers and ten minutes can add up to 211 miles. Long journeys suddenly look far less daunting.

Visually, BMW keeps the drama subtle. M badges sit on the front doors, aero mirror caps sharpen the flanks and a small roof spoiler crowns the tail. Inside, M Sport seats hug you tightly while a chunky M Sport wheel carries a red 12 o’clock marker. Press the M Mode button to flick between M Sport and M Sport Plus settings. The rest mirrors the standard iX3, from the 17.9-inch screen to the Panoramic Vision display.
The iX3 M60 shares its hardware with the new iX4 M60, which made its debut alongside it. Do not mistake it for the final word, though. Auto Express expects a full-fat iX3 M to follow, borrowing its powertrain from the upcoming electric M3 and packing more than 700hp. For now, the M60 sets the pace. And it sets it hard.
