The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is heading for the scrapheap, and this time it is official. Speaking at its 2026 Capital Markets Day, BMW confirmed it will not build a successor to the compact people carrier, naming the model directly as it set out plans to prune its sprawling range. The current car remains in production for now, but the second generation will be the last.

The reasoning is blunt commercial logic. BMW said the number of variants across the entire portfolio would be reviewed and cut back to sharpen profitability. The Active Tourer is simply the one model it was prepared to name on the day. Which other badges are for the chop remains unclear, so expect a nervous few months for anything sitting at the quieter end of the brochure.
It is a quiet end for a car that once caused uproar. When the original landed in 2014, it was BMW’s first front-wheel-drive model and its first MPV, and the purists reached for the smelling salts. More than a decade on, that outrage looks faintly silly. The UKL platform underneath it now supports the 1 Series, the X1 and a long list of other front-drive BMWs, and nobody blinks. The Active Tourer simply took the first hit.
The range had already been slimming down. The first-generation car spawned a seven-seat Gran Tourer, but the current model is strictly a five-seater. Diesel disappeared from the line-up some time ago, leaving a mild-hybrid petrol lineup built around the three-cylinder 220i and four-cylinder 223i, plus the 225e and 230e xDrive plug-in hybrids. Useful, efficient, quietly competent, and never the car anyone pinned to a bedroom wall.
Few BMW loyalists will mourn it, yet its departure matters more than the enthusiasts admit. Buyers who want a boxy, practical, properly packaged family car rather than another jacked-up crossover are running out of options. The Mercedes B-Class is also being retired without a replacement, which leaves the premium MPV sector all but deserted. One fewer alternative to the SUV tide is a loss, whatever your feelings about front-wheel drive.
