The BMW 2 Series Coupe gets the formula very nearly spot on, balancing genuine driving pleasure with everyday usability in a way few rivals manage. Keen drivers will gravitate towards the muscular M240i performance model, but the real strength lies in the complete package. Surprising practicality, strong build quality and muscular styling give it real presence, and that blend earned the 2 Series our 2025 Coupe of the Year award. As small petrol coupes grow rarer, this rear-driven BMW stands out as a true driver’s choice.

Unlike its front-wheel-drive Gran Coupe and Active Tourer relatives, the Coupe rides on BMW’s CLAR platform, allowing rear or all-wheel-drive layouts and sharper cornering composure. The engine range is compact but covers most tastes. The 220i offers 181bhp and a relaxed 7.5-second sprint to 62mph, better suited to refined cruising than red-line heroics. The 230i feels notably stronger with a deep, bassy note and a 5.9-second time. At the top, the M240i xDrive serves up 369bhp and a rich six-cylinder soundtrack alongside a 4.3-second blast.
On a twisting B road, the 2 Series holds its own with plenty of grip and precise steering, though a touch more feel at the limit would be welcome. Even the 220i delivers honest enjoyment, while the M240i keeps a rear-drive balance despite its xDrive system, taking on a likeable mini-GT character. Lightweight aluminium for the bonnet, front wings and suspension helps the car turn in keenly while staying easy to control. Around town, light steering and standard Parking Assistant make it simple to thread through tight streets.

Step inside and the cabin mirrors the larger 4 Series, dominated by a 12.3-inch driver’s display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen running BMW’s slick iDrive 8 software. The curved panel housing looks smart, and the retained click-wheel keeps menus manageable on the move, though the loss of physical climate buttons is a minor frustration. Build quality is very good throughout, with a clear sense of sporty luxury. Nostalgic touches abound, too, from circular headlights nodding to the 2002 to rear arches inspired by the original M3.
Practicality is a pleasant surprise for a two-door. The 390-litre boot edges a Volkswagen Golf, the rear seats fold in a 40:20:40 split, and a lower loading lip eases access. Usable rear seats even accept a child seat, though rear headroom is tight for taller adults. Running costs stay reasonable for the class, with the 220i managing up to 44.1mpg, and resale values are robust. A four-star Euro NCAP rating slightly disappoints, but a second-place finish in the 2026 Driver Power survey speaks volumes. The 230i M Sport makes the smartest pick.
