BMW’s 2 Series tips its cap to a golden era with the 325iS Homage and 333i Homage, two limited-run specials that channel South Africa’s motorsport folklore into modern metal. Built in tiny numbers and reserved for that market, the pair takes today’s compact coupé and overlays it with period-correct cues, turning the M240i xDrive and M2 into convincing tributes that look ready for a dawn run up a mountain pass.

The 325iS Homage wears dual rear spoilers, a front splitter and retro-pattern 20-inch M Performance wheels, plus black door handles that echo the original street racer. Inside, M Sport seats get contrast stitching and an armrest trimmed in Überkaro tartan—an unmistakable nod to quick E30s of the period—while a plaque spells out the car’s South African remit. Under the bonnet sits the familiar 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo straight-six with 382bhp and 500Nm; think strong mid-range and a cultured growl, good for 0–62mph in 4.3 seconds.
Turn to the 333i Homage, and the tone hardens. Based on the latest M2, it adds Alpina-style 20-inch wheels, bold period graphics, a carbon splitter and lip spoiler, plus a four-tailpipe M Performance exhaust. The cabin turns up the intent with carbon bucket seats and a model-specific plaque, while paint choices run from Alpine White and Sapphire Black to Brooklyn Grey, Zandvoort Blue and Fire Red. Power climbs to 473bhp and 600Nm from the 3.0-litre turbo six, sending the rear-drive coupé to 62mph in 4.0 seconds flat.

Beyond the parts list, both cars carry the right posture and stance: long bonnet, tight overhangs, broad track and a shoulder line that catches the light like the originals did. They’re more than dress-ups; they tell a local story about ingenuity when the first-gen M3 never officially landed in South Africa. One was built for Group N regs, the other to plug a motorsport gap—now they’re reimagined with modern safety, modern pace and a clear link to the badgework that inspired them.
Appropriately, these Homage editions will be allocated by auction, with proceeds directed to charities chosen by successful bidders and a pledge to keep each car for at least a year. Only 33 of each will exist. For South African enthusiasts, that makes the BMW 2 Series the perfect canvas: contemporary chassis and powertrains wearing period flavour with conviction, honouring the E30 spirit without diluting today’s performance brief.
