BMW i4 eDrive35 Takes Command As Australia’s Sole Variant EV

BMW has streamlined its Australian i4 range to a single model, and the BMW i4 eDrive35 steps forward as the lead act. The rear-drive set-up keeps the car light on its feet, while the familiar single-motor drivetrain delivers 210kW and 400Nm for brisk, effortless progress. It’s the variant most buyers were already choosing, and it now returns with smarter detailing and a longer claimed range to suit everyday use as well as longer weekend runs.

The update brings a fresh face with diamond-textured kidney grilles and new headlights, matched to the M Sport Package as standard. Inside, a D-shaped M leather steering wheel, heated front seats, brushed aluminium trim, and a powered glass sunroof sharpen the ambience without blunting the i4’s clean, driver-focused layout. M light 18-inch alloys finish the stance, giving the fastback its planted, rear-driven look on the road.

Under the skin, revised power electronics make the biggest difference. BMW has adopted silicon-carbide components in the inverter, improving efficiency by around 4.5 per cent. That hardware change adds up to an extra 18km of quoted range, taking the eDrive35 to 448km on the ADR 81/02 cycle. In practice, the car feels keener to conserve energy at a cruise yet still answers cleanly when you lean on the throttle, with the 66.4kWh battery providing a solid buffer for mixed driving.

The decision to retire the i4 eDrive40 and M50 xDrive locally puts the spotlight on a specification that already accounted for more than three-quarters of i4 sales. It’s a pragmatic move: one coherent package, rear-wheel drive for classic BMW balance, and enough real-world range to cover commuting and intercity hops without fuss. The chassis remains supple yet controlled, and the cabin’s tech suite continues to be intuitive once set up to taste.

Arriving before Christmas, the refreshed eDrive35 keeps the i4 story straightforward in Australia. With tidier aerodynamics, smarter electronics and a spec sheet that reads like a greatest hits list, this is the electric fastback distilled—clean lines, quiet torque and the right kit as standard, ready to cover distance with the calm assurance BMW owners expect.
