BMW iX5 60 xDrive Adds 217 Miles of Range in 10 Minutes Flat

Ten minutes. That’s all the new BMW iX5 60 xDrive needs to add up to 217 miles of range on the WLTP cycle. BMW proved it in Laguna Hills, California, plugging its first electric X5 into a charger pumping out a colossal 460kW. Partners IONNA and Alpitronic joined the demonstration in front of the international media. Drivers’ coffee breaks just got a lot shorter.

The secret lies in BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, known as Gen6. It runs on an 800V architecture, which unlocks quicker charging, longer range and bidirectional power flow. New cylindrical cells cram 20 per cent more energy into the same space than the prismatic cells of Gen5. Leaner, more efficient electric motors complete the package. First seen in the iX3, this hardware now flexes its muscle in a full-size SUV.

The numbers stack up neatly. A 141kWh net battery sits beneath the floor, and a 10 to 80 per cent top-up takes just 22 minutes. Efficiency stays sharp for such a substantial machine, with WLTP consumption between 20.1 and 23.9kWh per 100km on German-market cars. That’s a frugal appetite for a family bruiser of this size. Big body, small thirst.

Each partner brought its own weapon to the fight. Alpitronic supplied the high-power charging hardware, building on a long-running relationship with BMW. IONNA, the charging network, champions reliable and convenient charging in well-placed locations. BMW’s Dr Thomas Engelhardt called 460kW charging and a raft of new intelligent charging functions key aspects of Gen6. Alpitronic boss Philipp Senoner summed it up perfectly, insisting vehicle innovation and charging infrastructure must advance together.

One catch remains. This 460kW set-up is a technology demonstration, and chargers this potent are not commercially available in the US today. Still, the iX5 stands ready the moment the public infrastructure finally catches up. Rivals now have a fresh benchmark to chase. The age of the rapid-charging SUV has arrived, and it wears a kidney grille.
