BMW i7 Facelift Brings Whisper-Quiet Pace and Smart New Tech

Silence is the new luxury. The revised BMW i7 proves it from the very first mile, gliding along with barely a whisper from the motors or the road. The test car, an i7 60 xDrive, wore a coat of metallic green. BMW calls this the most extensive update in the model’s history. It is far more than a nip and tuck.

The face tells the story first. Gone are the split headlights, replaced by a slim single LED strip that sits above larger, illuminated kidney grilles. Redesigned taillights sharpen the rear, and the whole look now borrows heavily from the Neue Klasse iX3. Yet the long, stately 7 Series silhouette remains untouched. It still looks every inch the boardroom express.

Inside, the screens take over. BMW’s Panoramic iDrive stretches beneath the windscreen, packed with customisable widgets and a richer set of features than before. Rear passengers can fold down the 31.3-inch Theatre Screen, which now carries a camera for video calls. The Executive Lounge Pack adds a reclining rear seat with a leg rest for the ultimate chauffeured experience. The head-up display, though, feels almost redundant amid all that glass.

Forget range anxiety. The battery grows from 101.7kWh to 112.5kWh, and BMW claims up to 450 miles for the most efficient versions. Twin motors deliver 536bhp and 745Nm, enough to surge from rest to 60mph in 4.5 seconds. On a 250kW rapid charger, a 10 to 80 per cent top-up takes as little as 28 minutes. That is serious stamina for a full-size limousine.

On the move, the i7 floats. Air suspension soaks up broken tarmac with ease, yet the body stays tied down well enough to make corners genuinely enjoyable. Rear occupants enjoy acres of space and deeply cushioned seats. Electric power suits the 7 Series beautifully, delivering effortless, silent shove whenever the driver asks for it. This i7 is simply better than ever.
