Five hundred miles. One charge. The 2027 BMW iX5 has just cruised from San Francisco to Newport Beach without once stopping to plug in. BMW originally set its sights on 400 miles, but the electric SUV simply refused to quit. When it finally rolled into Newport Beach, roughly 50 miles of range still sat in reserve, hinting at a total reach of around 550 miles.

That figure blows straight past the official numbers. BMW’s own estimate, based on EPA testing, sits at 435 miles, so the iX5 beat it by a hefty 115. BMW Blog reported the run, and Las Vegas-based BMW salesman Chris Corral confirmed it on X, declaring that range anxiety is shrinking. Details of the driving style remain thin, however. Nobody has said how gently the throttle was treated.
The secret sits under the floor. A huge 144kWh Gen6 battery uses cylindrical cells, which pack around 20 per cent more energy density than the prismatic cells in BMW’s previous generation. An 800-volt architecture allows DC rapid charging at up to 460kW. Hook it up, and a 10 to 80 per cent top-up takes just 22 minutes. It can even power your home through Vehicle-to-Home capability.

Range is only half the story. The launch iX5 60 xDrive packs twin electric motors producing 570hp and 593lb-ft of torque. That shove fires the big SUV from rest to 60mph in 4.4 seconds, on to a top speed of 130mph. BMW revealed the car in June alongside its petrol-powered sibling. It is the first fully electric X5 ever built, and it clearly means business.
Rivals should be nervous. The Lucid Air Grand Touring remains the only EV officially rated beyond 500 miles, and the iX5 is now knocking on that door. Official EPA results are still pending, yet even the 435-mile claim would put it at the top of the midsize electric SUV class. The spaceship-like styling will divide opinion when sales start in early 2027. The range figures, on the other hand, are hard to argue with.
