After gliding through its first few thousand miles with only minor hiccups, CarandDriver’s BMW i4 xDrive40 suddenly hit an extended detour. A deer collision was the least of its troubles, as the car spent nearly four months in bureaucratic limbo for repairs. The bill soared past expectations, reflecting the complexities of parts procurement and insurance involvement.
Once finally liberated, the i4 picked up right where it left off. Its poised ride, accurate steering, and swift acceleration continue to channel the spirit of classic BMW sedans. However, winter brought a few EV compromises, including reduced range, slower charging speeds, and a frustrating limitation that prevents using the seat heaters with the climate system fully off. These quirks reminded us that an electric powertrain, for all its benefits, sometimes demands small sacrifices in cold weather.
In terms of functionality, the i4’s condition-based service schedule has yet to prompt a dealer visit, and its day-to-day performance remains largely smooth. Still, minor gripes have emerged: some drivers find the seating position cramped, the wireless phone charger overheats devices, and there’s limited rear legroom. However, for most staffers, the i4’s balanced chassis and capable handling outweigh these everyday annoyances.
As the seasons change and temperatures climb, we’re ready to swap the winter tyres for summer rubber and push the i4 even harder in the coming months. Its ability to deliver near-silent, effortless thrust never fails to impress, even if the cold-weather range dips occasionally test our confidence. With 20,000 miles behind us and another 20,000 ahead, the next chapters should clarify whether this electric BMW can satisfy our practical needs and our thirst for driving excitement.
