BMW X3 And Lexus NX Clash in a Real-World Compact SUV Battle

The BMW X3 and the Lexus NX sit near the top of the compact luxury SUV pile. Both chase the same buyers. Both take very different routes to win them over. The X3 leans sporty and tech-heavy. The NX plays the calm, sensible card. So which one suits real life better? We lined them up to find out.

The X3 arrives in this fight in two guises. The 30 xDrive uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four with mild-hybrid help, good for 255bhp and a 0-60mph time of six seconds. The M50 xDrive turns it up hard. Its 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six musters 393bhp and cracks 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds. Both send drive to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic. The 48-volt system smooths the stop-start and trims turbo lag, adding up to 11bhp when you lean on it. The M50 also gains firmer suspension, stronger brakes and a meaner face.

The Lexus fights back with breadth. The NX 350 packs a 2.4-litre turbo four with 275bhp. The 350h hybrid sips fuel and returns around 40mpg. The plug-in 450h+ is the pick of the range, mixing 304bhp with roughly 37 miles of electric range and a 0-60mph sprint of six seconds. Every NX rides on comfort-first suspension. It is the quieter, more relaxed companion, and it asks far less of you at the pumps.

Inside, both cabins feel thoroughly modern. The X3 fronts a 12.3-inch cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen, with ambient lighting and tri-zone climate as standard. It also swallows more luggage, with 31.5 cubic feet behind the rear bench and 67.1 with the seats dropped. The NX counters with a crisp 14-inch screen on plusher trims, a head-up display and an optional Mark Levinson stereo. Its boot is the smaller of the two, but the layout is easy to live with.

Reliability is where the Lexus lands its heaviest blow. Consumer Reports rates the NX in the low 70s out of 100, while the X3 languishes in the 40s. The NX also carries a longer powertrain warranty. The X3 is the keener steer, no question, and the M50 is seriously rapid. Yet most compact SUVs spend their days on the school run and the motorway. Judged on that daily grind, the NX blend of composure, economy and dependability makes it the smarter buy. Pick the X3 if driving pleasure tops your list.
