The BMW iX1 that has just tipped Regensburg past nine million cars wears a paint job you will struggle to find twice in a car park. Velvet Orchid II Metallic, ordered through the BMW Individual programme, on a battery-electric compact crossover bound for a customer in Sweden. It was built to that buyer’s own specification rather than pulled from standard stock. BMW lined the moment up to land in the plant’s 40th year of production. None of that timing was left to chance.
Regensburg opened its doors in 1986 with the E30 3 Series. The deal struck with the city asked for 400 cars a day and 3,500 jobs. The site blew past both figures long ago. Roughly 9,000 people now clock in across Regensburg and neighbouring Wackersdorf. Three shifts kept the line rolling through 2025, finishing a vehicle roughly every 57 seconds.
That tempo made Regensburg BMW’s highest-volume factory in Europe, with around 356,000 cars shipped worldwide last year. The plant had cleared 8.7 million builds by the close of 2025 before crossing nine million this September. The X1 and X2 carry the load today. Petrol, plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions of both share a single line, in whatever order the order book demands.
That is the detail BMW wants noticed. More than 150,000 electrified cars left Regensburg in 2025 without combustion output taking a hit. No separate EV factory. No parallel assembly hall. Just one line that changes powertrain as the schedule dictates, plus a steady tilt towards front-drive-based crossovers. The paint grabs the eye, but the flexibility underneath is the substance.
The timing sharpens the point. BMW is steering hard towards electric-first architecture, and petrol-only SUVs are living on borrowed time. A plant that can dial EV volume up or down on demand becomes a pressure valve rather than a bottleneck. No waiting for a fresh site to come online. This orchid-coloured iX1 is a showpiece, but it also hints at how BMW plans to absorb whatever the market throws next.
