2027 BMW iX1 To Undergo A Radical Neue Klasse Transformation

The BMW iX1 is being stripped back to its foundations and rebuilt from the wheels up. Fresh spy images of the 2027 model confirm that BMW’s compact electric SUV will not simply receive a nip and tuck but a wholesale transformation rooted in the Neue Klasse architecture that underpins the acclaimed iX3. Launched in 2022, the current iX1 is barely four years old, yet BMW is already preparing to retire its bones in favour of a purpose-built electric platform that promises sharper styling, greater efficiency, and a dramatically modernised cabin. The combustion-powered X1, by contrast, will soldier on with its existing body and only minor cosmetic and interior tweaks.

Visually, the new iX1 will borrow heavily from its bigger sibling. Expect smoother, more aerodynamic bodywork with blanked-off kidney grilles, a distinctive headlight cluster that nods to iconic BMW designs like the 2002 and E30-generation 3 Series, and wide rear light bars echoing the iX3’s signature look. Flush-fitting door handles, a swept-back windscreen, and aero-optimised wheel covers on select variants will all contribute to slicing through the air more cleanly, directly benefiting range. The roofline is set to remain broadly similar to the current car’s silhouette, potentially leaving room for a sleeker coupe-SUV variant further down the line.

Beneath the skin is where the biggest gains will be felt. The Neue Klasse platform’s 800-volt electrical architecture brings with it a maximum charging capability of up to 400 kW, a colossal leap over the current car’s 130 kW ceiling. While the iX1’s shorter wheelbase means a smaller battery than the iX3’s mammoth 108.7 kWh unit, BMW’s efficiency improvements and the shift to a cylindrical cell layout should deliver a substantial range increase beyond the current model’s 293-mile maximum. Rear-wheel drive will become the default on entry-level variants, a welcome shift for BMW purists, with dual-motor all-wheel-drive versions adding power at the front axle. BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive motors cut energy losses by 40 per cent and shed 10 per cent of their weight compared to the previous generation, meaning every kilowatt hour works harder.

Inside, the iX1 will receive BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system, featuring a full-width display strip and a large central touchscreen running Operating System X. Top-specification models are expected to offer an optional head-up display, while the HypersonX audio system will shape the car’s acoustic character to create a more engaging connection between driver and machine. A two-spoke steering wheel with haptic feedback controls is also anticipated. Because the Neue Klasse platform was designed exclusively for electric powertrains, packaging should improve noticeably, freeing up more passenger space even if boot capacity follows a similar pattern to the iX3, where a marginal reduction in luggage volume was traded for better interior room.

With a launch expected in 2027, the new BMW iX1 will roll into one of the most fiercely contested segments in the market. BMW’s plan to extend Neue Klasse technology across its entire portfolio by the end of that year means the iX1 will not be an outlier but part of a sweeping, brand-wide offensive. If the iX3’s early momentum is any indication, a compact SUV built on the same platform and carrying the same technological firepower could prove to be the volume driver that puts Neue Klasse within reach of a far broader audience.
