BMW iX1 Review: Sharp-Handling Electric SUV With Premium Bite

The BMW iX1 is the smallest electric model in the brand’s current line-up, but it doesn’t feel like a “baby BMW” once you’re behind the wheel. Instead, it’s a compact SUV that’s aiming straight at the premium end of the family EV market, taking on the usual suspects while also keeping one eye on more mainstream alternatives that offer strong value and plenty of kit.

It’s closely related to the regular X1, which is no bad thing: the driving position is spot on, visibility is good for threading through town, and the cabin has that solid, well-bolted-together feel buyers expect from the badge. The layout is modern without being needlessly confusing, with crisp screens and smart storage touches that make it easy to live with day to day.

On the road, the iX1’s strongest card is its chassis. It turns in neatly, stays composed through quick direction changes, and feels more tied down than many electric SUVs of this size. The trade-off is ride comfort, especially on sportier trims with larger wheels and firmer suspension settings; over broken surfaces, it can feel busy in a way that’s less relaxing than some rivals built with a softer edge.

The power delivery is smooth and instantly responsive, which suits motorway work as much as stop-start traffic. Braking is confidence-inspiring, with a clean handover between regeneration and the friction brakes, though adjusting regen through the infotainment can be more fiddly than using paddles. Refinement is generally strong at speed, with wind noise well contained, leaving tyre roar as the main soundtrack on rougher tarmac.

Range and charging performance are perfectly workable for most routines, even if the iX1 isn’t the class benchmark on efficiency. The real appeal is the blend: premium build, a polished driving feel, and a sensible SUV body that fits family life without feeling like a rolling appliance. Choose the trim and wheel set-up carefully, and the iX1 becomes a very convincing all-rounder.
