The BMW X3 takes centre stage in this head-to-head, and the latest model makes a strong case from the off. With all-wheel drive as standard and a chassis that feels taut without being harsh, the X3 30 xDrive delivers brisk real-world pace and tidy body control, while the M50 xDrive layers on serious shove with only a small efficiency penalty. The Mercedes-Benz GLC counters with a broader powertrain choice, including a plug-in hybrid for those chasing electric miles, but like-for-like, the X3 is the punchier drive.

Inside, BMW has put space and usability front and centre. The X3 serves up generous boot capacity and clever touches such as a one-press shortcut for the 360-degree cameras when parking. Front seats offer a wide range of adjustment and long-journey support, and the cabin feels robustly assembled. The GLC leans more towards a lounge-like ambience and slightly roomier passenger quarters, but gives up meaningful luggage volume, and the centre console can feel fussy in day-to-day use.
Tech is a genuine battleground. The X3’s curved display blends a crisp digital cluster with a 14.9-inch touchscreen, backed by snappy responses, wireless smartphone mirroring and a neatly arranged vertical charging pad. Mercedes replies with a tall 11.9-inch unit, excellent voice control and superb augmented-reality navigation. Call it honours even on pure gadgetry, but BMW’s hands-free motorway assistant and intuitive ergonomics tip everyday usability in the X3’s favour.
On the road, differences sharpen. The X3 30 xDrive feels keener to turn, brakes with real precision and settles quickly over poor surfaces, making for confident back-road progress and relaxed motorway miles. The GLC majors on comfort with a softer edge and quieter demeanour, yet lacks the BMW’s precision and rolls a touch more over undulations. Taken as a whole, the BMW X3 is the more rounded package—sportier to drive, easier to live with and roomier where it counts—while the Mercedes-Benz GLC remains the better pick for buyers who prize plush ambience above all else.
