The BMW X3 and the Audi Q5 sit at the sharp end of the compact luxury SUV class, and both landed fresh redesigns for 2026. Each wears an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ badge. Yet they chase very different briefs. The X3 wants to engage the driver. The Q5 wants to soothe every passenger.
Start under the bonnet. The X3 30 xDrive uses a 255bhp turbocharged four with mild-hybrid assistance. Buyers after real pace can step up to the M50 xDrive and its 393bhp straight-six. The Q5 counters with a 268bhp turbo four, a slick dual-clutch gearbox and standard Quattro. On paper the Audi has a slight edge. In reality the pair feel closely matched off the line, though the Audi trades sharpness for polish.
Behind the wheel the split widens. BMW tunes the X3 to steer with precision and hold its body flat through a bend. The Q5 leans on optional adaptive air suspension for a hushed, gliding gait. Inside, the Q5 plays its strongest card. Its curved cockpit, crisp central screen and optional passenger display feel a step ahead. The X3 answers with a well-built, driver-focused cabin and, crucially, a larger boot.
Efficiency tips the balance. The X3 30 xDrive returns around 29mpg combined against roughly 24 for the Q5. That gap, plus keener handling and more load space, hands the BMW a narrow win. The Q5 remains the pick for anyone who prizes cabin tech and outright comfort. Both are superb. The X3 simply covers more bases.
