The new BMW iX3 arrives just as the holiday season begins, and BMW has made the long drive to the coast far less daunting. A batch of charging features now rolls out across BMW and MINI electric models. The aim is simple. Take the guesswork out of topping up away from home.
Public charging has long frustrated drivers. Unlike a petrol forecourt, there are rarely clear prices on display. The My BMW App and the MINI App now fix that. Drivers see nearby chargers, their output, the tariffs and the likely cost of a session. Every tariff saved in the Charging Wallet appears, alongside any local ad-hoc rates. Picking the cheapest plug becomes easy.
There is a clever touch inside the car too. On Neue Klasse models, the display shows the price per kilowatt-hour as energy flows in. You watch the units and the running total climb, much like a fuel pump. It means full control over spending while the battery fills.
The network behind it keeps growing. BMW Group Charging now spans 3.1 million points worldwide, with 1.1 million across Europe. Route planning does the heavy lifting. Enter a destination and BMW Maps or MINI Navigation slots in charging stops, preconditions the battery for a rapid DC session, and reroutes you if a charger drops offline. The result is a calmer journey from driveway to destination.
