BMW i3 Takes On Mercedes C-Class In Electric Luxury Battle

The rivalry between the BMW i3 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class has officially charged into a new dimension, with both German marques pulling the covers off their fully electric 2027 saloons within weeks of one another. For decades, the BMW 3 Series and C-Class have served as the gateway vehicles into premium German motoring, offering the same badge prestige and engineering flair as their larger stablemates in a more accessible package. Now, with the petrol era winding down, the i3 and electric C-Class are poised to carry that legacy forward on battery power alone. Here is how the two rivals stack up ahead of their showroom debuts.

Styling marks the first major departure, with neither machine bearing much resemblance to the combustion models they replace. The i3 retains a classic three-box silhouette with sharper body lines, a more pronounced boot and freshly reworked kidney grilles that now blend seamlessly into the headlight clusters. The C-Class, by contrast, takes a softer, fastback-inspired approach with flowing curves, a tall illuminated grille and a coupe-like roofline echoing the new electric GLC. Both saloons feature notably short overhangs, giving them a planted stance on the road, though they genuinely look as if they belong to separate segments when viewed from the side.

Rear-end treatments reinforce that sense of divergence. The i3 evolves BMW’s signature L-shaped tail lamp motif, keeping the design language recognisable to loyalists, while the C-Class breaks completely from tradition with circular light clusters linked by a full-width black band stretching across the boot lid. Underneath the bonnet panels, both saloons offer a frunk to stash charging cables, and performance figures are closely matched. Dual-motor, all-wheel-drive launch versions see the i3 produce 463bhp and the C-Class punch out up to 482bhp, with the Mercedes dispatching the 0 to 60mph sprint in under 3.9 seconds and the BMW expected to post similar numbers.

Range and charging paint a more complex picture. BMW claims 440 miles on the EPA cycle for the i3, whereas Mercedes quotes 473 miles on the WLTP measurement, which typically translates to roughly 400 miles on EPA testing. Charging architecture favours the Munich contender, with the i3 accepting up to 400kW of peak DC power compared to the 330kW ceiling on the C-Class. In practice, a ten-minute top-up at a suitably powerful DC fast charger will recover around 250 miles of driving range in the BMW, while the Mercedes pulls back approximately 200 miles in the same window.

Step into either cabin, and the character contrasts continue. The i3 favours a clean, minimalist layout anchored by a hexagonal touchscreen paired with a full-width driver display stretched beneath the windscreen, and it offers Veganza imitation leather upholstery. The C-Class leans into opulence with the optional 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen spanning the entire dashboard and the choice of a fully vegan-certified trim. Boot space in the Mercedes measures 16.6 cubic feet, respectable for a saloon of this class, and both cars feature folding rear seats for awkward loads. The 3 Series has traditionally played the role of the keen driver’s choice, while the C-Class has wooed buyers with refinement, and with these two models now pulling in visibly different directions, the rivalry looks set to remain every bit as compelling in the electric age.
