The 2027 BMW i5 Stretches Its Range And Leaves Rivals Behind

The 2027 BMW i5 arrives with a welcome pair of upgrades. BMW’s electric executive saloon now travels further on a charge. Every version also gains a native Tesla-style NACS charging port. The timing is neat. The i5 gains ground just as the Tesla Model S bows out.

Range is the headline. The base eDrive40 now covers up to 328 miles on 19-inch wheels. That is 18 miles more than before, a lift of roughly six per cent. The gain comes purely from efficiency. It now averages 116 MPGe, up from 110. Fit larger wheels and the figure eases back, to 299 miles on 20-inch rims and 262 miles on 21s.

The single-motor eDrive40 sends 335 horsepower to the rear axle. Torque stands at 295 lb-ft. It reaches 60 mph in 5.4 seconds and runs on to 120 mph. Want more grip? The xDrive40 adds a front motor for 389 horsepower. That trims the sprint to 4.9 seconds and lifts top speed to 130 mph. The trade-off is range, rated at an estimated 262 to 283 miles.

Charging keeps pace. The i5 draws up to 205 kilowatts from a DC rapid charger. A 10 to 80 per cent fill takes about half an hour. A ten-minute splash claws back close to 80 to 86 miles. The switch to NACS is the bigger story. BMW has retired the old CCS port and now bundles free DC and AC adapters with every car.

The range-topping i5 M60 carries over as a 2026 model, and it too wears a NACS port. Its dual motors muster 593 horsepower. That is enough for a 3.7-second dash to 60 mph, with up to 253 miles of range. Across the board, the i5 now goes further, charges more easily and slots neatly into the Tesla network. For BMW’s electric saloon, that is a shrewd step forward.
