The 2026 BMW i5 carries the electric torch for the legendary 5 Series, slotting neatly between the compact i4 Gran Coupe and the flagship i7 in BMW’s electric saloon lineup. Where many luxury EVs lean heavily on technology as their party trick, the i5 sticks to the proven 5 Series formula: a composed rear-biased chassis, driver-focused cabin, and genuine four-adult comfort. Buyers chasing an electric saloon that still feels like a proper BMW behind the wheel will find the i5 well matched to that brief.

For the 2026 model year, revised silicon carbide inverter components and lower-friction wheel bearings deliver tangible range gains across the line-up. The eDrive40 now stretches to an EPA-estimated 310 miles on 19-inch alloys, up from 295 miles previously. The xDrive40 climbs from 248 to 259 miles on its 21-inch wheels thanks to the same hardware tweaks. The flagship i5 M60 also gains a native NACS charging port, opening up direct access to Tesla Supercharger stations without faffing about with adapters. The eDrive40 and xDrive40 will receive adapter support via a remote software update rolling out in early spring 2026.
On the outside, the i5 mirrors the standard 5 Series silhouette with a long wheelbase, low roofline, and pronounced rear haunches that give it a planted stance. Optional BMW Iconic Glow illuminated kidney grilles light up with animated sequences when the car sits stationary and glow continuously while underway. The optional Dynamic Light Carpet adds animated light graphics at all four door zones for entry and exit, a proper theatrical touch. Seven exterior colours are offered, including Cape York Green Metallic and Oxide Grey Metallic, alongside familiar choices like Alpine White and Black Sapphire Metallic. Wheel sizes range from 19 inches on the base eDrive40 up to 21-inch designs on upper trims, with the 19-inch fitment unlocking the headline 310-mile range figure.

Slide inside, and the cabin makes a confident statement. The Curved Display, housing a 14.9-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, comes standard across all trims, complete with wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and a wireless charging pad. Perforated and quilted Veganza upholstery is fitted as standard in four shades: Smoke White, Burgundy Red, Espresso Brown, and Black. The Interaction Bar running between the dashboard and doors integrates touch-sensitive controls for climate and secondary functions, while six USB-C ports cover both rows. A standard 12-speaker, 205-watt Harman Kardon Premium Sound System rounds out the core equipment, with an optional Sky Lounge Panoramic Roof extending natural light to both rows.
Behind the wheel, the i5 retains the polished suspension tuning, responsive steering, and refinement that have long defined the 5 Series. An optional Highway Assistant brings hands-free lane changes on motorways, taking the strain out of longer cruises. The touchscreen-only climate and secondary controls do force the driver’s eyes off the road more than ideal, and the M60’s range drops noticeably compared to the eDrive40’s 310-mile ceiling. None of the trims offers a frunk either, which feels like a missed trick. Even so, for buyers prioritising range, cabin quality, and the unmistakable feel of a properly engineered electric saloon, the 2026 BMW i5 lands as one of the most balanced choices in its segment.
