BMW And Alexa+ Put A Smarter Co-Driver In The iX3

BMW is sharpening the way drivers talk to their cars, with a major upgrade to the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant built on Amazon’s Alexa+ architecture. Rolling out from 2026 and launching with the BMW iX3, the new system is designed to make spoken interaction feel less like issuing commands and more like having a proper conversation with your vehicle.

Instead of sticking to rigid, pre-set phrases, drivers and passengers will be able to speak naturally and string several requests together in one go. Ask for information, adjust vehicle settings, then follow up with a quick “take me there” and the car can carry the context straight into navigation, infotainment, or other onboard functions without missing a beat.

Linking the assistant with an Amazon account also broadens what the cabin can do on demand. That means smoother access to music streaming, up-to-date news, and a wider pool of general knowledge, all delivered through the same in-car voice interface that already sits at the heart of BMW’s iDrive experience.

Under the bonnet of this upgrade is generative AI based on a large language model, built to understand nuance, keep track of conversational context, and respond with more human-sounding answers. BMW says this helps the assistant learn from interaction over time, improving how it interprets intent and tightening up responses as drivers use it day to day.

The enhanced assistant is set to be showcased publicly at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, with initial availability focused on Germany and the United States. From there, BMW plans a wider rollout across additional markets and models, aligning the upgrade with its next-generation in-car interface and the push towards a more software-defined BMW line-up.
