Audi Q7 Versus BMW X5: Which Luxury SUV Lasts Longer - BMW.SG | BMW Singapore Owners Community

Audi Q7 Versus BMW X5: Which Luxury SUV Lasts Longer

SUVs have steadily reshaped the roads for decades, and the figures back it up. Among last year’s 25 best-selling vehicles, they claimed 48.6% of the market against 40% for trucks. For wealthier buyers, the midsize SUV has long been the sweet spot, serving up space, practicality and luxury while staying compact enough to drive with a touch more verve than its full-size relatives. In the European camp, the Audi Q7 and BMW X5 have been trading punches for years, each bringing its own blend of strengths to the table. The real question here is which one holds together better over the long haul, since even the plushest cabin loses its charm when you are stranded at the roadside. To settle it, we leaned on Consumer Reports data drawn from genuine owner feedback.

The third-generation Q7 has only just been announced, and not before time, since the current car has been on sale in the US since the 2017 model year. Close to a decade on, it still looks and feels remarkably fresh, the reward for steady fettling and a couple of meaningful overhauls. A major 2020 update brought a fresh dual-touchscreen infotainment layout along with revised front and rear bumpers and a host of smaller tweaks. The 2025 model year added upgraded exterior lighting and further infotainment refinements. Two engine options remain on the table, plus a 500-hp SQ7 that sits outside this comparison, and the outgoing generation is still listed for sale with tempting used prices.

The X5 arrived in 2019 and is now an old stager too, with a replacement expected in late 2026 or early next year. For now, it remains one of BMW’s strongest sellers, kept current with sharp interior tech and the latest powertrains through several updates. The exterior has been honed to echo newer BMW models, while the cabin gained the curved iDrive display and a clutch of advanced driver aids. The regular line-up offers two engines, with the 40i available with or without all-wheel drive alongside a hybrid using the same base unit. Above them sit the 523-hp X5 M60i and the 617-hp X5 M Competition, though this comparison sticks to the regular models.

Audi against BMW is a rivalry that has raged across countless segments for years, and on tech, performance and comfort, the two trade blows evenly. The Q7 offers stronger value at the entry point thanks to its base four-cylinder, and the V6 55TFSI undercuts the X5 xDrive40i, too. The X5 hits back with a sharper pace and a keener drive. But durability, not driving appeal, is the focus here, and which car is less likely to land you with unplanned bills. Their long production runs hand us years of data to weigh up.

New platforms typically see reliability dip in the early years before settling, and facelifts can trigger a short-term wobble too, yet a maker who irons out the faults should deliver its best years late in the run. The Q7 followed that arc at first, then slid again across the 2020 to 2022 model years after the big update. It clawed back ground in 2023, but the scores rarely climbed beyond the 40s, leaving a middling 43.1 average across the whole run. The X5 also opened poorly before lifting its game, and aside from a 2023 dip, it has fared relatively well, landing a respectable 56.6 average. For a mechanically complex luxury SUV, it points to the BMW as the steadier long-term bet. Reliability still varies car to car, mind you, and your driving habits and servicing discipline carry real weight, so diligent upkeep can tip the odds in your favour whichever badge you pick.
