BMW’s Neue Klasse design push is meant to ripple across the range, but the facelifted 5 Series looks set to take a more measured route. Recent camouflaged test cars suggest BMW is refining the current shape rather than bolting on a dramatic new face, signalling a smoother transition between today’s styling and what’s coming next.
At the front, the changes appear deliberate rather than theatrical. The kidney grilles stay close to the existing outline but look slimmer and more sharply defined, while the headlights gain a cleaner graphic that avoids the more experimental look seen on newer concept-led models. The overall effect is of a nose that’s been tightened and modernised, with sharper cut-lines and a more confident stance.
Rendered interpretations based on the test car’s proportions point to a neater bumper, too. Expect simplified intake treatment, cleaner surfacing and a front-end that looks less busy without becoming bland. It’s the sort of update that should read as fresher on the road without alienating buyers who prefer their executive saloon to keep a degree of restraint.
Down the sides, don’t expect a revolution. The 5 Series’ silhouette and shoulder line are likely to carry over, with fresh wheel designs doing most of the visual heavy lifting. At the rear, the lights should keep their familiar shape but adopt revised internal elements, adding a new signature without changing the car’s overall stance and width.
Inside is where the bigger shift could land, with BMW widely expected to move the 5 Series towards a more panoramic, screen-led layout. Even if the mechanical package remains broadly familiar across petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric variants, a more modern cabin interface and a tidier exterior could be enough to keep the 5 Series looking current as BMW’s next design chapter gathers pace.
