The BMW 5 Series returns for 2027 largely as you were, and that is no bad thing. This midsize luxury saloon carries over from 2026 without a single meaningful change. It still fields three distinct powertrains, still wears sharp yet restrained styling, and still packs a cabin brimming with technology. What it trades away is a slice of the driving verve that once defined the badge.

The range opens with the 530i and its 255bhp 2.0-litre turbo four, backed by 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance. Step up to the 540i xDrive, and you get a smooth 3.0-litre straight six making 375bhp, good for a 0-60mph dash of 4.4 seconds. Topping the lineup is the 550e xDrive, a plug-in hybrid that pairs the six with an electric motor for 483bhp and a brisk 4.1-second sprint. It also covers around 34 miles on battery power alone. An eight-speed automatic and rear-biased xDrive feature across most of the range.
Visually, the 5 Series plays it cool. A moderate kidney grille, available with an Iconic Glow illuminated surround, sits between slim dual-pod LED headlights, while a fastback-style tail keeps the profile clean. Nineteen-inch alloys are standard, with 20s and 21s on the options list. Inside, the digital BMW Curved Display fuses a 12.3-inch instrument binnacle with a 14.9-inch touchscreen running slick OS 8.5 software. Veganza leatherette, heated powered front seats, wireless charging and Harman Kardon audio all feature as standard.

Practicality is a real strong suit. The boot swallows 18.4 cubic feet, the largest of any midsize luxury saloon on sale in the States, and a powered lid comes as standard. Fold the rear bench, and there is more room again. The ride stays hushed and refined, and efficiency holds up well right across the lineup. BMW backs the car with a four-year, 50,000-mile warranty, stretching to eight years on the hybrid battery. The optional M Sport pack sharpens things with firmer suspension and beefier brakes.
The catch is that the 5 Series no longer sits at the head of its class. It leans towards comfort and quiet over the tactile bite older versions delivered, and the 550e’s near 4,900lb heft makes itself known when you press on. Our pick would be the 540i xDrive, which blends a cultured straight six with proper traction and feels the most cohesive of the bunch. Against the Audi A6, Mercedes E-Class, Cadillac CT5, Genesis G80 and Lexus ES, it remains a polished operator. It simply asks you to prize refinement over outright involvement.
