BMW has confirmed that just 151 examples of the 2026 BMW 540i xDrive Legacy Edition will reach Canadian driveways, each one celebrating the beloved straight-six powertrain previously out of reach in this market. The special run mates the latest G60-generation 5 Series chassis to a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six, sending 375 bhp and 398 lb-ft to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The result is a saloon capable of dispatching 0–100 km/h in a claimed 4.7 seconds, backed by a cultured exhaust note that reminds purists why six cylinders in line remain a BMW calling card.

Every Legacy Edition leaves the Dingolfing plant with the M Sport Pro package, lending sharper bumpers, shadow-line exterior trim and uprated brakes hiding behind 21-inch Individual forged wheels. Buyers can specify either factory paint or delve into BMW Individual Manufaktur for a bespoke finish, ensuring no two cars need look alike. Inside, a sweeping curved display running iDrive 8.5 dominates the dashboard, joined by an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound set-up, ventilated sports seats and subtle ‘Legacy’ badging on the centre console.

While the four-cylinder 530i continues as the mainstream choice, the limited-run 540i delivers an extra dose of real-world pace without straying into full M territory. All-wheel drive preserves composure when weather turns hostile, while adaptive dampers promise a deft balance between motorway comfort and back-road agility.
Order books are open now, with first deliveries slated for the fourth quarter of 2025. Given the tiny allocation, prospective owners will need to move fast if they want BMW’s final word on the six-cylinder 5 Series before the electrified era takes full hold.
