BMW Group Leads the Charge as Biggest US Automotive Exporter

The BMW Group has once again claimed pole position as the largest automotive exporter by value in the United States, with its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina serving as the powerhouse behind the achievement. According to figures from the US Department of Commerce, the facility shipped close to 200,000 BMW X models to global markets last year, reinforcing the brand’s dominance in American vehicle exports. It is a title the German manufacturer has held for over a decade, and one it shows no signs of surrendering any time soon.

Plant Spartanburg is no ordinary assembly line. It is the largest BMW Group facility on the planet, rolling out more than 1,500 vehicles every single day. In 2025, the workforce assembled 412,799 BMW X models — the third-highest production volume in the plant’s 32-year history. Roughly half of those vehicles were shipped to nearly 120 markets worldwide, departing primarily through the Port of Charleston and additional East Coast ports, with more than 14,000 units also dispatched by rail.

The operation’s impact stretches far beyond the factory gates. Spartanburg supports over 11,000 jobs on site and fuels an extensive supplier network across the region, creating a ripple effect that bolsters the wider American economy. Robert Engelhorn, president and CEO of BMW Manufacturing, has emphasised that these exports play a vital role in strengthening the country’s trade balance — a factor he considers essential for long-term economic growth.

BMW’s board member for production, Milan Nedeljkovi?, has pointed to free trade and open markets as the engine behind this sustained success, noting that plants and their surrounding supplier ecosystems flourish when goods can move freely across borders. Since 2014, the Spartanburg operation has shipped close to three million vehicles to buyers around the world, cementing its status as a cornerstone of BMW’s global production strategy.

With decades of continuous investment in South Carolina and a proven track record of high-volume output, Plant Spartanburg remains firmly in the driving seat. For the BMW Group, this facility is not just a manufacturing hub — it is the launchpad that keeps its X model range on roads from Shanghai to São Paulo, and the clearest proof that American-built BMWs continue to lead the global export race.
