BMW files U.S. Trademark for the 2 Series Fleet

Car and Driver reports that BMW has already filed a U.S. trademarks for 2 Series model designation including 228, 230, and 235. Though BMW has a reputation of filling in advance for trademarks and name conventions which are not always used, what’s interesting is that the news of the filing was released at the same time that rumors around a front-wheel-drive lineup have been spread. Are these two information connected?

Car and Driver thinks that the the the next-generation of 1 Series models might just get the 2 Series badge. BMW is planning to release a small-car fleet by 2015. They also speculate that the 2 Series will most likely be a rear wheel line-up. The -28, -30, and -35 suffixes are currently affixed to six-cylinder engines in BMW’s other vehicles, but it is still most likely that the 2 Series will be using the four-cylinder engines. Right now, this still cannot be confirmed.
