BMW 750e PHEV Unleashes Hybrid Performance

The latest BMW 750e xHybrid represents an exciting evolution of BMW’s flagship 7 series, now offered as a plug-in hybrid. This model combines a turbocharged straight-six engine with an electric motor powered by a 14.4-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. It boasts a robust output of 483 horsepower in “boost” mode, positioning the 750e strategically between the base model 740i and the higher-powered 760i xDrive mild-hybrid and i7 EV. Notably, it offers an electric range of 34 miles in pure EV mode, significantly improving over the previous generation’s capabilities.

Previously, the i7 was tested and found to balance luxury and sportiness without overly emphasizing its EV nature. This made the tester curious about how the 750e PHEV would compare, especially in integrating its hybrid system.

The 750e xHybrid is marketed starting at $107,000, with the test vehicle adorned in Frozen Pure Gray Metallic and other premium options priced at $135,345. Early impressions reveal a car that commands attention with its bold exterior and luxurious interior and showcases significant technological advancements. The optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system and exceptionally plush interior appointments set a high standard for comfort and luxury.

The latest iteration of BMW’s iDrive 8 infotainment system enhances the driving experience with its responsiveness and attractive design. However, initial driving tests indicate some potential areas for improvement. Integrating the electric and gas motors can sometimes feel abrupt, particularly in urban driving settings. The braking system exhibits some inconsistency, with a noticeable difference between regenerative braking softness and firmer pad-on-rotor contact.

Despite its premium pricing, which surpasses that of the pure EV i7 and the mild-hybrid 740i, the 750e PHEV could attract buyers who need more than 300 miles of range or cannot charge at home regularly, or who prefer the additional power over the 375-horsepower 740i xDrive.
