BMW M4 GTS vs Lotus 3-Eleven: Top Gear Test - BMW.SG | BMW Singapore Owners Community

BMW M4 GTS vs Lotus 3-Eleven: Top Gear Test

The BMW M4 GTS is the German automaker’s latest hardcore M car. It kills on the track, similar to what a Porsche 911 GT3 RS would do. It is equipped with water-injection, which increases the output of the standard M4 engine to 493 horsepower. Thanks to the manually-adjustable suspension, carbon fiber aero parts, and a great sounding titanium exhaust, it is worthy to be called a monster on the track. However how would the car compare against the Lotus 3-eleven, a proper, stripped out, no-nonsense track car? Here’s an answer from Top Gear.

BMW M4 GTS vs Lotus 3-Eleven

Top Gear stacks the BMW M4 GTS against the brand-new Lotus 3-Eleven — made by the British to be a proper track killer. It is powered by a Toyota-sourced 3.5 liter V6, mounted with a supercharger, that develops 460 horsepower and runs that power through an Xtrac sequential-manual gearbox. The power is less than what the M4 GTS offers but it has a weight advantage. The Lotus only weighs 890 kg (1,962 lbs). One really interesting feature is the adjustable Öhlins shocks and AP racing brakes. In terms of speed, both cars are fast but the Lotus takes the lead. Both do well in attacking corners with crazy velocity.

The Lotus 3-Eleven gives a full racing experiences. It has a lively steering, perfect suspension, and no roof to activate all the senses of the driver in an emotional manner. However, its 64 percent rear weight bias means that it actually tends to push a bit in corners, as the front wheels fight for traction, and the brakes are far too touchy. That being said, it is a wild beast that will not appeal to some enthusiasts.

On the other hand, the BMW M4 GTS is very smart and technologically equipped. The performance it gives is precise. It has a far sharper front end that makes it more agile through corners, despite its weight disadvantage. It is quick and doesn’t need time to be tamed like its competitor. Perfect steering and clever differential to ensure that you are in the right place. Plus, it feels real to drive, as long as you keep the traction control off. Top Gear says, it really depends on which characteristics you prefer.
