[VIDEO] BMW iX xDrive40 Surpassed the Slalom Test

The BMW iX xDrive40 model without the optional rear-wheel steering will never match the agility and playfulness of a Mazda MX-5 Miata because it is big and heavy. Still, the electric luxury sedan did not disappoint in the slalom test, which many consider an SUV’s Achilles heel.

To see how it performs in the cones, the Spanish folks at km77 decided to put the same EV through a moose test. A slalom test showed that the BMW iX xDrive40 performed much better than previously thought. We did not expect much from a vehicle that weighs 2,530 kilos.

As in the Elk test, BMW’s press car was fitted with Pirelli P Zero Elect tyres size 255/50 R21 on both axles. The journalists praised the iX xDrive40 for the ease with which it changed direction while manoeuvring around the pesky cones. Body roll was kept within limits during the evasive manoeuvres, while the electronic stability control intervened only discreetly. The highest speed the driver could reach was on the way back, when the iX briefly reached 73 km/h at one point.

The iX xDrive40 took 24.8 seconds to complete the slalom course. That’s not saying much, though, because the journalists are just startin with this kind of test. The only other vehicle they have tested so far was the Mercedes EQS, which was not much faster either. The electric full-size liftback took 24.5 seconds.
