BMW Group’s Regensburg plant has earned the prestigious “Factory of the Year” award for 2024 in the category of large-series assembly. This annual German competition, regarded as one of the most prominent in the industrial sector, highlights facilities that tackle production challenges with innovation and flexibility. The Regensburg plant, a key site in BMW’s global network, produces up to 1,400 BMW X1 and BMW X2 vehicles daily, incorporating various drivetrain options, from traditional internal combustion engines to hybrids and fully electric models—all on a single production line.
Kearney, the management consultancy behind the award, partnered with Süddeutscher Verlag events and the industrial publication “Produktion” to evaluate the plants. They praised Regensburg’s transformation toward BMW’s advanced iFactory model. The facility’s setup, alongside the adaptability of its workforce, demonstrated an inspiring blueprint for production excellence in Germany, as Kearney project manager Daniel Stengel noted.
Plant Director Armin Ebner expressed gratitude for the win, attributing it to the commitment and skill of the Regensburg team. “The recognition by industry experts is both a reward and an inspiration,” he shared. Ebner credited the staff’s flexibility and commitment to high standards, acknowledging their role in achieving this milestone.
Regensburg’s success was further bolstered by cutting-edge digital tools and AI-driven processes that boost productivity and enhance product quality. The digital approach contributes to the plant’s resilience, making it a model of efficiency and adaptability in BMW’s global operations.
Winners in this competition undergo rigorous evaluation, from detailed application data to in-depth audits conducted by Kearney. A panel of experts from industry and academia finalises the decision, ensuring the chosen factories set benchmarks in modern manufacturing.
