The BMW Group has stripped the friction out of public charging by turning every compatible electric BMW and MINI into what is effectively a rolling credit card. Since mid-March, drivers in Germany have been able to pull up to a public DC charging point, plug in and let the vehicle handle the rest. There is no app to open, no charging card to tap and no fumbling with QR codes on the column. The car authenticates itself automatically at the station the moment the cable connects, the session begins instantly, and the cost is billed straight to the credit card already stored in the driver’s BMW or MINI account.
Setting the system up takes just a few taps through the Plug and Charge menu inside the My BMW or MINI app. Once activated, the driver simply logs into the vehicle with their customer ID, and the car is ready to self-authenticate at any supported station. Billing runs at the charging operator’s current ad hoc rate, which is displayed both in the vehicle’s infotainment system and in the app for supported locations, giving full visibility over costs before a single kilowatt flows into the battery. It is a pay-as-you-go model that keeps drivers in complete control of their spending without locking them into a separate charging contract.
That contract-free approach is one of the smartest elements of the rollout. For the first time, Plug and Charge is open to customer groups who do not hold an existing charging subscription, a category that includes tourists driving a rental, fleet operators and company car drivers who log into their vehicle temporarily with a personal BMW or MINI account. It removes one of the biggest barriers that occasional EV users face at public chargers and makes the experience feel as instinctive as pulling into a petrol station, swiping a card and driving away.
The service launches in partnership with Mer Germany across more than 1,400 charging points in Germany and Austria, powered by Hubject’s Plug and Charge ecosystem and payment infrastructure. BMW has confirmed that additional charging point operators and further markets will be onboarded progressively throughout 2026, broadening the network’s reach as the technology gains traction. The phased expansion mirrors the approach the brand has taken with other digital services, rolling out in a controlled manner before scaling across Europe and beyond.
By removing the clutter of apps, cards and contracts from the charging process, BMW is making a clear statement that electric motoring should feel as seamless as refuelling a combustion car. The technology works quietly in the background, handling authentication and payment so that all the driver needs to do is connect the cable and wait. For a brand that has built its reputation on driving pleasure, ensuring that the moments between drives are just as effortless is a logical next gear in the journey towards mainstream electric mobility.
