BMW iX3 Leads The Neue Klasse Charge With 434 Miles Of Range

The 2027 BMW iX3 marks a genuine turning point for the Munich marque, arriving as the first model built on the all-new Neue Klasse architecture. This compact electric luxury SUV launches in a single iX3 50 xDrive form, pairing dual electric motors and all-wheel drive with a sixth-generation 800-volt electrical system. The headline figures are striking, with up to 434 miles of range from a battery offering 112.3kWh of usable capacity, plus DC fast charging at speeds of up to 400kW. For anyone wanting a premium electric SUV that shrugs off range anxiety on long journeys, the iX3 makes a compelling case.

Beneath the clean surfacing sits some clever engineering. BMW’s Heart of Joy central computer knits together the powertrain, braking and energy recuperation, constantly coordinating them for a responsive, confidence-inspiring feel. With 463hp on tap, the iX3 50 xDrive reaches 60mph in 4.7 seconds, while a Soft Stop function smooths the final moments of braking to a standstill. The minimalist exterior wears a narrow kidney grille, automatically deploying door handles, sculpted shoulders and slim LED taillights, riding on 20-inch Aero alloy wheels with an M Sport kit available for those wanting a sharper look.

The cabin feels every bit as forward-thinking. BMW’s new Panoramic iDrive pairs a slanted 17.9-inch Free-Cut Design touchscreen with a 43-inch Panoramic Vision display stretching across the base of the windscreen. Navigation, wireless smartphone integration and 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio come as standard, while a 3D head-up display is optional. The unusual steering wheel features a top spoke with Shy Tech controls, and rear passengers can recline their backrests between 23 and 31 degrees. Heated front seats are included, with leather upholstery, tri-zone climate control and a panoramic glass sunroof on the options list.

Charging is where the iX3 truly shines. The 800-volt architecture allows the battery to gain 170 to 185 miles in just 10 minutes, completing a 10 to 80 per cent top-up in only 21 minutes. A native NACS port unlocks the Tesla Supercharger network, and bidirectional charging means the SUV can double as a mobile power bank. Efficiency impresses too, with EPA ratings reaching 118MPGe combined on the standard wheels, and even the least favourable wheel and tyre combination still delivers 383 miles of range.

Practicality holds up well against the combustion X3, with 30.4 cubic feet of boot space behind the rear seats and 65.4 with them folded, comfortably ahead of the Macan EV. A small frunk handles the charging cables, and ground clearance of around 6.9 inches copes with steep driveways and moderate snow. The single launch trim limits choice for now, and some specifications remain preliminary, but the iX3 blends bold styling, class-leading charging and genuine driving pleasure. BMW appears to have catapulted its new compact SUV straight to the top of its class.
