BMW is giving its smaller electric SUVs a timely lift, with updates for the iX1 and iX2 aimed squarely at stretching range and keeping them competitive in a fast-moving segment. While the spotlight has been on bigger, longer-range models, these compact crossovers are the ones many buyers actually use every day, and extra miles between plugs is the upgrade that matters most.

The headline gain comes from a modest rise in usable battery capacity, paired with efficiency improvements that add up on the road. The iX2 mirrors those improvements, with both its single- and twin-motor versions posting stronger official figures than before.

Rather than chasing a dramatic rework, BMW appears to have focused on the parts that quietly waste energy. A new silicon-carbide inverter is fitted to cut electrical losses, and further friction-reduction measures are expected elsewhere in the drivetrain and rolling hardware. These are the sort of engineering changes that don’t alter the character of the car, but can make a meaningful difference to consumption, especially at steady cruising speeds.

Importantly, the fundamentals stay familiar. Charging capability remains unchanged, and so do the performance figures, meaning buyers get the extra range without having to relearn the car’s rhythm or compromise on everyday usability.
