The upcoming BMW X3 will be built on the new generation CLAR architecture. It will incorporate as many lightweight materials and the automaker can fit in. The weight is expected to drop significantly.
A BMW S55 3-liter straight six twin-turbo engine is rumored to be the mill for this SUV. It may use the water injection system of the BMW M4 GTS for a power output of up to 500 horsepower. If it will rely only on weight reduction, then it can go up to 450 horsepower. Not bad!
It is unknown yet if BMW develop a new dual-clutch gearbox that works with all-wheel drive or if they will use an 8-speed ZF unit as it does on the X5 M and X6 M models.
The recent spy shots and videos of X3 M cars show the prototypes wearing Schmidt Racing wheels. It may be a hint of a special setup being for the first proper M car in the X3 family.
