The iX Flow has travelled over 6,000 miles from Las Vegas to Munich, where it is on display at BMW Welt for the time being. It made its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in early January, when its colour-changing body amazed the public. Since the X6 was already painted in Vantablack a few years ago, some may recall that its not the first time an SUV has received an unusual paint job.
The BMW iX Flow will not go into production much like the “blackest black in the world” SUV. It has never been applied to the body of a car before, although it uses unique technology. BMW wraps the body with a film containing millions of colour capsules inspired by an e-book reader. To change the appearance of the SUV, negatively charged white or positively charged pigments are electrically stimulated.
In addition, the iX Flow has electrophoretic ink that does not consume indefinitely like a display. Instead, the E Ink only requires power when it changes from one finish to another. The technology improves the efficiency of the vehicle when the body is painted completely white.
Compared to a black car, a white car reflects much more sunlight, resulting in a cooler interior. As a result, the car puts less strain on the battery to cool the interior. This increases the range and also makes the iX Flow look incredibly good.
If you want to take a close look at the colour-changing SUV, you have the opportunity to do so at BMW Welt until mid-March. From Monday to Saturday, visiting hours start at 7:30 am and ends at midnight. You can come between 9 a.m. and midnight on Sundays and public holidays. The BMW iX Flow can be seen in the newly opened BMW i showcase.
