Weight is a very important when it comes to the race track performance of a vehicle. The lighter the car is, the faster and better it can do on the track. But making a car lightweight isn’t that easy. It is a maze that most automakers are trying to solve nowadays with the help of carbon fiber technology.
Packeisen Motorsport from Wuppertal in Germany seems to have mastered how to make seriously lightweight vehicles. In Spring 2011, Packeisen will unveil their PM3 V8 CSL Light based on the current BMW M3. This vehicle is completely modded and lightweight.
In order to make the car lightweight, Packeisen had to literally turn every bolt and replace every screw with lighter ones made of magnesium or aluminum. More than 500 hours of handcraft is needed to complete the project. Only 4 units can be made per year. The package will include stripped-out interior, racing seats, plastic windows, hood, a trunk lid and doors made of carbon fiber.
The end product is a 1,300 kilograms (2,850 lbs) vehicle, weight including the driver and all the fluids necessary for driving. Packeisen made sure to perfectly balanced between the axles, thus resulting to an exhilarating performance on the track. It is fitted with an FIA-approved safety cell, an airjack system for faster tire changes and a tank volume of no less than 100 liters.
Under the hood, this vehicle is powered by tuned up engine delivering 485 bhp. Packeisen promises that this vehicle will perform a laptime of less that 7:30 minutes at Döttinger Höhe, the longest straight line of the famous Nürburgring track .
Despite all these racing features, the PM3 CSL Light is completey street legal. To suit all needs and tastes, Packeisen will built the car to your specifications, from road-legal to a true race car. It will be released in Spring 2011 and sold at around 16,000 Euros in Germany.
