BMW M3 CS Handschalter Is Already Scarce As Wait Lists Swell

If ever a modern BMW M car was built squarely for gearheads, the BMW M3 CS Handschalter is surely it. This limited-run machine reads like a final love letter to dedicated drivers, combining a manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive, reduced weight and a sharper chassis setup. BMW bills it as the closing chapter for the sixth-generation M3, and the hardware backs up the sentiment. Yet before the car has even reached showrooms, securing one without joining a lengthy queue is shaping up to be the hardest part of ownership.

The mechanical recipe is wonderfully pure. Under the bonnet sits the 3.0-litre twin-turbo S58 inline-six producing 473hp, paired exclusively with a six-speed manual driving the rear wheels. BMW quotes 0 to 60mph in 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 180mph when fitted with the M Driver’s Package. Anyone already configuring one in Techno Violet or Isle of Man Green faces a sobering reality, however, particularly in the US, where allocations are extremely tight and dealer waiting lists are growing by the day.

The numbers explain the scramble. According to BMWBlog, BMW M Certified dealers are expected to receive just two cars each, while most regular dealers may see only one. A second example might only materialise if another dealer passes on its allocation. Total US availability is estimated at between 800 and 900 units, though that figure could shift. Even at the upper end, demand comfortably outstrips supply, lending this saloon a level of collectibility rarely seen in the performance segment.

Then comes the real sting. Some dealers are already attaching hefty premiums to the car, with markups reportedly climbing to substantial sums over sticker. Such behaviour is hardly new for low-volume enthusiast machinery, having previously hit limited Porsche GT models, special Dodge Challengers and Ford Mustangs, and sought-after Japanese performance cars. When supply runs this tight, prices almost always head north, and the Handschalter looks set to follow the familiar pattern.

The timing adds poignancy, too. Manual gearboxes are becoming ever harder to justify in modern performance cars, as BMW M boss Frank van Meel has acknowledged, making this three-pedal special something worth celebrating in North America. The M3 CS Handschalter is undeniably a car that car enthusiasts will remember for years to come. Whether it justifies paying well over the odds is another matter entirely. For most buyers, patience and a strong relationship with a dealer may prove just as valuable as horsepower.
