Drag Race: BMW M2 vs Ford Mustang 5.0 GT

The BMW M2 and the Ford Mustang 5.0 GT has been compared quite often recently. As the latest sports car from the M Division, the BMW M2 is made to be a crowing achievement for the brand. In fact, we haven’t seen a BMW car quite like it in over 10 years. The Ford Mustang 5.0 GT on the other hand is the American automaker’s first stab at making the Mustang a proper sports car. Put them together in one track for a drag race, let’s find out which is faster.

The Ford is all muscle with 5-litres and eight cylinders delivering 410bhp. BMW on the other hand is smart with new technology. It is powered by a 3-litres and a turbocharged straight-six engine that delivers a 365bhp. That’s a big difference in terms of power. However, BMW is also a lot lighter which gives it an advantage in terms of power-to-weight ratio. The BMW weights in at only 1,570 kg (3,461 lbs), compared 1,720 kg (3,781 lbs) for the Mustang. The difference is within 1bhp of each other. That being said, the cars do not match well on paper.

In this drag race, both cars engage launch control at the starting line. BMW’s double-clutch gearbox is super fast while the Mustang is mated to an old school six-speed manual and they work quite differently. The brain of the BMW allows it to launch as fast as possible, leaving the Mustang off the line. The BMW M2 gets from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds while it takes 4.8 for Mustang. The M2 does the 1/4 mile in 12.7 seconds while the Mustang takes 13.4 and the M2 beats the Mustang again at the 1/2 mile mark with a 19.9 second time over the Mustang’s 20.9. The M2’s turbocharged torque, superior traction, and fast-shifting DCT gearbox allows it to win this race even if there is a big difference in ponies.
