When the BMW X1 launched, many BMW fans were disappointed about the switch to the front-wheel drive UKL architecture. To the hardcore BMW fans, this feels like heresy to what the brand is known for. The high sales of the BMW X1 that followed proved that not all car buyers feel the same way. As an answer to the critics, BMW is about to launch the BMW X2 as a sportier X1 alternative in the Paris Motor Show next month.
The BMW X2 will be more aggressive in design and a sportier option among the BMW small SUV lineup. It will like the X4 to the X6, or the X3 to the X5. It definitely falls into the logic of what BMW offers in their fleet.
It will have the same front-wheel drive UKL architecture though, but the driving experience will be more enthusiast oriented. Based on the reviews of the new BMW X1, there isn’t much to do to improve and create the X2. The X1 is already fun to drive. The BMW X2 will just be a bit lower, lighter and more aggressive in the design department.
Reports say we might see a slightly more aggressively sloped hood, raked windshield, sweeping roof line and a tucked rear — somewhat close to the BMW X4’s look.
Engine-wise, the BMW X2 will be powered by a few turbocharged four-cylinder engines in petrol and diesel options. It will be mated to the eight-speed Aisin gearbox or a six-speed manual for European markets.
Those who prefer sporty hatchbacks will be attracted to the BMW X2, says the German automaker. In fact, that is their target market. If they’re looking for a slightly bigger option than a normal hatchback, this would be a perfect car to drive — and an exciting one to drive at that. Not bad for a BMW X1 alternative.
