Rumors about the BMW 8 Series has been circulating for months and recent news says that it has received the green light. To further confirm that, reports of an official series codename has floated. Turns out it will be called internally as G14/G15.
The BMW 8 Series will carry a chassis code the designation used is also Gxx, like the 7 Series (G11/G12), future 5 Series (G30/G31) and new 3 Series (G20). Interesting.
Automobile Magazine reports that the German automaker is relaunching the 8 Series model to compete with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and replace the 6 Series Coupe and Convertible.
BMW 6 Series fans don’t need to panic. BMW will not be eliminating the 6 Series badge. However, their focus is shifted to creating one that competes with the Porsche. The pedigree will be different but it is the direction that BMW think will make more sense for the segment.
For the BMW 8 Series, the engineers will make it weigh less and more agile than the Merc S-Class two-doors. Interior space will also be plenty.
The German automaker has already reserved some badges for the 8 Series lineup including 825, 830, 835, 845, 850, M850 and M8. No reports have come up about the difference between the G14 and G15 chassis codes. There’s a possibility though that BMW is preparing two separate body styles. Another possibility would be having a short and long wheelbase variant like the 7 Series. For now, only the official BMW 8 Series Codename is known.
The BMW i8 is expected to make a market launch in 2020.
