BMW self-driving cars in China soon

An artificial intelligence and robotics summit was held in Shenzhen, China. During this event, it was revealed that the automaker’s self-driving cars will be launched in China soon.

The news came from the senior manager for highly automated driving at BMW Group, Maximilian Doemling. He said that BMW’s self-driving car will hit the Chinese roads in about five years.

“If you’re expecting autonomous function where you can be on the highway, pressing the button and the car is doing everything for you, like lane changing and driving and that stuff, and you can play with smartphone, and you’re always safe, I mean we had the big announcement with Intel and Mobileye that we will have the iNext in 2021.”

Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Harald Krüger, also said that the iNEXT will be, “our new innovation driver, with autonomous driving, digital connectivity, intelligent lightweight design, a totally new interior and ultimately bringing the next generation of electro-mobility to the road.”

The new model is the star of BMW’s effort to win the hearts of the consumers as the top luxury-car brand in the market. As more and more consumers shift to electric and self-driving automobiles, BMW wants to be ahead of the game. The pressure is on; especially with Tesla’s big plans, Apple’s potential iCar, and the same offerings even by Mercedes-Benz.

A study by IHS Automotive estimates that 10% of the cars in the market will be self-driving vehicles in 2035. However, the manufacturing journey is quite long and we’ll never know what we will see next.
