BMW iX Review: Exploring the Mobile Experience

Using the My BMW app alongside the iX adds a digital layer to InsideEVs’ Tim Stevens’ driving experience. Over the past year, he tested out the 2024 BMW iX, which has shown impressive range and functionality. However, this time, the focus is on the app that connects the driver to the car. The My BMW app offers a variety of features, though some can be a bit frustrating at times.

The app provides a good overview of the iX’s status, showing whether it’s locked, charging, or needing maintenance. It can unlock the car, flash the lights, or even trigger software updates directly from your phone. But the preconditioning feature, which allows the car to heat or cool before you get in, has had its challenges, especially when data connections falter in parking garages.

The app also gives access to remote services like parking the car or viewing a 360-degree camera feed of your iX from anywhere. While Tim doesn’t use the parking feature, he frequently checks the cameras when leaving the car in sketchy areas. Other app perks include tracking trips and monitoring how efficiently the car is performing, although some data-sharing limitations between drivers can be a bit of a letdown.

Overall, the My BMW app is packed with useful tools, but it’s clear that it has accumulated a lot of features over time, sometimes at the expense of ease of use. Despite some rough edges, the app remains an important companion to the iX, and Tim will keep using it—so long as his iX doesn’t hide away in another basement parking garage.
