According to the latest J.D. Power U.S. Seat Quality and Satisfaction Study, the BMW Z4 has taken the top spot as the car with the best seats in the industry. Owners reported the fewest issues of any vehicle surveyed, with just 3.2 complaints for every 100 cars – a remarkable result for a two-seat roadster. The Z4’s seating is supplied by Magna, and with features such as longer seat rails and electro-pneumatic backrests, it seems owners appreciate both comfort and adjustability in equal measure.

The annual study measures quality and satisfaction based on reported problems within the first 90 days of ownership. This year’s data came from more than 92,000 buyers and lessees of 2025 models, covering everything from headrest comfort and material durability to ease of adjustment. A lower ‘PP100’ score reflects better results, and the BMW Z4’s achievement sets it well ahead of competitors in its class.
The report shows that seat-related issues are on the rise across the market for the first time in nearly a decade, with drivers increasingly citing frustrations around controls, memory settings, and massage functions. These design-led problems account for around 80 per cent of all complaints. Despite this trend, some manufacturers have managed to impress owners by focusing on ergonomics and practicality.

Elsewhere in the rankings, the Ford Bronco Sport, Subaru Impreza, Hyundai Sonata and Chevrolet Traverse all led their respective mass-market segments, while premium categories saw strong performances from Porsche, Audi and Jaguar. Magna’s involvement extended beyond BMW, with its work on the Ford Escape also helping that model into the top three for compact SUVs.
Seat comfort remains a crucial factor in driver satisfaction. Hours spent behind the wheel can take a toll on the spine, but features such as lumbar adjustment, wide ranges of movement, and active ergonomics can make all the difference. While new technologies can sometimes complicate usability, the study shows that when executed well, thoughtful seat design continues to elevate the driving experience.
With the BMW Z4 at the forefront, 2025’s results underline the importance of seat quality not just as a luxury, but as an essential element of modern car design. After all, no matter how powerful or efficient a vehicle may be, it is the seat that connects driver and machine every mile of the journey.
