The BMW Z4 has often felt caught between two jobs: not quite sharp enough to be a focused sports car, yet too firm and fussy to play the laid-back grand tourer. For 2025, one option changes the whole mood. The Edition Handschalter package finally pairs the Z4 with a six-speed manual, and, crucially, it doesn’t feel like an afterthought bolted on for nostalgia points.
This isn’t a woolly, vague gearshift either. BMW has reworked the hardware, and the feel is tighter and more deliberate, with a clean, mechanical action that rewards quick, confident shifts. The powertrain suddenly makes more sense with three pedals, letting you meter out torque with your right foot and choose the exact ratio you want, rather than letting an automatic do the thinking.
More importantly, the chassis gets attention to match. Revised tuning, extra spring support and stiffer anti-roll bars give the car a more progressive rear end, so it doesn’t go from planted to skittish in one awkward moment. You can lean on the tyres through a corner, feed in throttle, and feel the car stay composed instead of biting back. It becomes a roadster you can place neatly on a B-road, not just a straight-line cruiser with a loud button for “Sport”.
BMW also makes sure the Handschalter cars look the part. A staggered wheel set-up adds visual muscle, darker exterior detailing suits the Z4’s low nose and short tail, and the cabin feels a touch more special with richer trim. There’s even an exclusive paint choice for those who want their Z4 to stand out at the kerb without shouting.
Living with it is where the surprise really lands. The Z4’s older iDrive set-up now feels like a blessing: the screen is a sensible size, the climate controls still have proper buttons, and there are handy shortcut keys and a rotary controller that let you change settings without diving into menus. It’s simpler, quicker to use, and far more in keeping with a manual roadster’s back-to-basics brief—making it all the more poignant that the Z4 is expected to bow out after the 2026 model year.
